Seat belt campaign issues 8,050 tickets

June 24, 2012

After the launch of the national Click It or Ticket campaign in May, about 8,050 seat belt and child seat violation tickets were issued in Michigan, according to release from Michigan State Police Office of Highway Safety Planning.

The campaign, which ran May 21 through June 3, collected about 1,000 fewer citations than last year’s effort.

Reports from 157 police agencies in 26 Michigan counties show 14,761 vehicles were stopped during the two-week period. After the state received a record high seat belt use average at 97.9 percent in 2009, the percentage dropped to 94.5 percent in 2011.

In addition to seat belt use violations, police made 53 drug arrests and 95 drunk driving arrests.
Grant-funded counties that participated in Click It or Ticket included Ingham, Wayne, Washtenaw, Ottawa, Kent, Houghton, Genesee, Delta, Berrien, Bay, Muskegon, Monroe and Allegan.
