Becoming a police officer for MSU was Sam Miller’s dream job.

“It was the number one goal for a place to work,” he said.

Miller’s dream became a reality on Monday morning as the recent graduate was sworn into the MSU police force by Chief Jim Dunlap.

While earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at MSU, Miller first began as a Green Coat, the majority of whom are student employees who work primarily at basketball or football games checking incoming attendees for prohibited items.

He then was promoted to student supervisor in the Homeland Security and Planning Division, supervising student employees assisting with logistical information for special events on campus.

Miller attended the 89th Mid-Michigan Police Academy at Lansing Community College’s West Campus and graduated May 11. He applied for the position at MSU police halfway through his training and received a conditional offer upon his completion at the academy.

It wasn’t until Miller approached her in search of an internship that Lieutenant Jennifer Brown learned the future officer had something special to add to the department.

“He really thinks outside of the box,” she said. “In terms of police skills, that’s something that can go a long way.”

Brown said Miller’s other talents lie in working with people of all ages, from all nationalities and backgrounds.

Miller said he’s looking forward to interacting with the student population on a daily basis and being available to assist the needs of the community as they come. But one particular season stands out from the rest.

“Obviously working football season is always a fun part of the job,” he said. “It will be good to be a part of it as an officer.”

Aside from Spartan football, Miller said there are a number of special assignments in the department he has his eye on that will be available to begin in a few months.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said from her time knowing Miller, she believes his technical talent will be an asset to the department.

“He was an excellent worker, punctual and just an all-around stand up person,” she said.

When it comes to working for MSU police, Miller said he’s in it for the long run.

“This is a lifelong career and where I wanted to be and stay for a long time,” he said.
