A somewhat rare event took place in the early morning hours Sunday, when two females reportedly robbed Admiral Gas Station, 1120 E. Grand River Ave., allegedly spraying the station clerk with Mace.
The circumstances of the robbery were fairly uncommon given that few robberies happen in the area, and even fewer are by female robbers, East Lansing police Sgt. Scott Wriggelsworth said.
“It’s a fairly rare occurrence,” Wriggelsworth said. “Armed robberies by two female suspects are very rare.”
According to a press release from the East Lansing Police Department, police responded to a reported armed robbery at 4:33 a.m. Sunday. The station clerk said the two females had fled after robbing the store armed with a knife, according to the release. The clerk acquired minor injuries from the incident.
One suspect was arrested near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Hagadorn Road, and the other was arrested after arriving at the hotel where the two had been staying, according to the report.
Wriggelsworth said the two were staying at TownePlace Suites in East Lansing, 2855 Hannah Blvd.
Wriggelsworth suggested residents listen to robbers and do what they’re told when faced with similar circumstances.
“We always encourage people to cooperate with the robber,” Wriggelsworth said, adding that items and money can be replaced but people can’t. “Do what they say and don’t get hurt.”
Education senior Maya Pasini said although the incident doesn’t make her feel too unsafe, she is a bit alarmed.
“Of all places, the college town of East Lansing?” she said. “It’s a bit strange.”
