Free local concert series set to start this Friday

June 6, 2012

Every Friday night at 7 p.m. from now until Labor Day, there will be a free concert at the Lake Lansing Band Shell.

Aengus McIntosh, Chairperson of the Band Shell Committee, says the committee tries to choose a variety of music.

“We try to have an eclectic mix of music,” he said. “We try to pick bands that can market themselves.”

One member of the committee emcees the concert each weekend.

McIntosh said to help pay for the band, a red can is sent through the audience.

“It allows us to pay them what they’re worth,” he said.

The committee sits down every October to decide the schedule, and McIntosh said they try to bring back bands the community enjoyed.

He said the committee keeps three or four nights open so they can better draw a crowd.

Still, the sound level cannot go higher than 85 dB, so McIntosh said sometimes the committee must be careful with the selections.

One of the bands performing at the band shell is the Sea Cruisers and the group’s singer and drummer, Don Dove, said the band likes performing at the park.

“It’s a really fun place to play,” he said. “They are nice people to play for.”

Dove added that the band shell is a beautiful place to play music.

For the first time, Dove said the Sea Cruisers are performing the first and the last shows of the season.

Dove said that if the committee wanted the band back, he wouldn’t complain.

“If they want us back, I won’t take anything for granted,” he said.

At the first performance, he said the weather didn’t cooperate, but they still had a good turnout.

Pat Witte, Park Manager at Lake Lansing, said that weather is a big factor when it comes to attendance.

He said that because of the rain, last Friday’s concert was very poorly attended.

Witte said an average of 975 people come to the concerts and that the highest attendance was at a Sea Cruisers concert last summer where over 2,200 people came.

The evening is geared toward families and kids, and Witte said there are inflatable toys, like a moon bounce and giant slide, for kids to play on.

“It’s built around family entertainment,” Witte said. “Bring a blanket and food.”
