Student hosts online show to advise men on dating, health

May 13, 2012

Taylor Miller noticed that sometimes guys have questions about fashion, health and dating, but don’t know who to ask.

The journalism senior and former MSU soccer player, decided to help.

In February 2012 she began hosting “Help The Other Guy” or HTOG, an online show to help men
with lifestyle choices, including advice on dating, health and fitness.

“A lot of the episodes can (offer advice) for guys and girls,” Miller said. “We interview a lot of experts and professionals on various topics to help people improve their way of living.”

The website is updated with a new episode each Wednesday at 11 p.m.

The idea for the show was created by Chris Hill of Olympia Entertainment in Detroit.

A few years ago, Hill and a friend were talking about situations to prevent themselves from being “that guy.”

“We would run into guys in our professional and personal lives who were making mistakes you think guys would know about ahead of time, like … awkwardly interacting at the bar,” Hill said.

The original idea for HTOG was a radio show called “Don’t Be That Guy.” Hill’s main goal is to build a network of guys from all over the country to communicate on different levels about common questions and situations.

MSU was chosen as the first location to cover after being nominated as one of the “Top Bro Schools,” by College Magazine in February 2012, which Hill said was a hot topic.

Miller auditioned for the part that same month, so Hill and his team could get a sense of her personality, fashion sense and skills on camera.

Episodes of HTOG include casual conversations about dating expectations with Miller’s friends, on-the-street style interviews with random students across campus, a step-by-step guide of how to
pick out the right suit and more.

Miller said her favorite part is going out into campus and interacting with people.

“I love meeting new people and seeing what people think,” she said. “When I walk around campus and strike up conversations with new faces, (that) is the most fun part of it.”

Including guys and girls in group discussions is a good way to get different perspectives, she said.

There is talk of pitching the show to a national network, and eventually having a “boot camp” type of event for guys in the beginning of the school year at universities across the country, Hill
said.

The boot camp would segment the guys into different groups based on what they need improvement on, he said.

Graduate student Matt Kolp said the best topic for guys would be do’s and don’ts of talking to and picking people up at the bar.

“I know girls who have great stories of failures,” Kolp said. “Guys in general are looking for any kind of advantage they can get.”
