An attempt at cooking dinner got a little out of hand at about 5:51 p.m. Wednesday when a kitchen fire erupted on the third floor of Building D in the 731 Burcham Apartment Complex, East Lansing Deputy Fire Chief Troy Brya said.

An occupant of the mostly student apartments, a woman in her early 20s, was cooking dinner on her stove when the dish she was making caught fire, Brya said.

The woman attempted to extinguish the flames by putting the food in the sink, but the fire continued to grow.

Members of the East Lansing Fire Department were able to contain and extinguish the flames within a matter of minutes, but the interior and exterior of the apartment sustained smoke damage.

The woman sustained minor injuries from handling the flaming food dish and was examined by firefighter paramedics on the scene.
