Despite slow-to-warm crowd, Childish Gambino impresses with spirited performance

It might have taken 55 minutes, but Childish Gambino finally got back what he put into his performance Wednesday night.

For the majority of his Wednesday show, Childish Gambino — the alter ego of “Community” on NBC’s Donald Glover — was unable to get fans to do much more than bob their heads and mouth the words. But it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The rapper, comedian, actor and writer spent an hour and seven minutes bouncing around the Auditorium stage with seemingly endless energy. He displayed immaculate flow, furiously rapping with an intensity not typically heard on his recorded songs.

Glover displayed his flair for the dramatic throughout the night, several times allowing for the
music to quiet and the lights to dim before he came back with a vengeance.

At no time was this strategy more effective than when Glover ended his song “L.E.S.” with a long, drawn-out crescendo. It seemed Glover was about to launch into another hard-hitting song, but the lights dimmed once again and a few slow piano chords were heard.

Glover’s extended climax paid off when the heavy, electronic bass of “Heartbreak” dropped, and the crowd began to show signs of life.

However, it wasn’t until Glover broke into his banger “You See Me” off his 2011 album “Camp” that the crowd really got into the show. Hands bounced up and down as the crowd enthusiastically chanted along with the hook, “U-C-L-A.”

Glover pushed the momentum even further by following that up with his single “Bonfire,” a heavy bass-laden track that sounds more like a Pharoahe Monch song than something that came from “Community’s” loveable Troy Barnes.

Glover rode the crowd’s newfound energy through to the encore, in which he performed a remix of Tyga’s “Rack City,” followed by a new single before ending with “Light’s Turned On.”

All in all, Glover put on a fantastic show, filled with more energy than I’ve ever seen from a rap concert. I just wish the crowd was there to see it.
