Rep. receives 1-year license suspension

March 19, 2012

On Wednesday, State Rep. Bob Genetski, R-Saugatuck, will have one of his last chances to drive himself to the Capitol this year to hear MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon testify in front of House lawmakers.

The West Michigan Republican and House Appropriations Higher Education subcommittee chairman had his license suspended for a year during an administrative court hearing Monday at the Secretary of State location of 3315 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

The suspension is a result of his arrest on campus for drunken driving and refusing a Breathalyzer test in January.

Administrative hearing officer Jay Todd ruled Genetski unreasonably refused a Breathalyzer during the early hours of Jan. 19, when he was pulled over by MSU police on Michigan Avenue near the Beal Street campus entrance following Gov. Rick Snyder’s State of the State address. Genetski told MSU police Officer Casey Christman he had consumed two beers before he refused a Breathalyzer test and was taken to the Ingham County Jail.

The suspension will begin April 9 and end April 8, 2013. The suspension is separate from Genetski’s criminal charges, which could land him up to 93 days in jail.

Genetski’s attorney, Mike Nichols, said he is not sure whether they will appeal the decision further. Genetski did not testify Monday.

“We’ve got to consider everything you have in front of you and go from there,” Nichols said.

Genetski opted to release the police video of his arrest earlier this month, after MSU previously declined to release it on the grounds it violated personal privacy.

Genetski’s pretrial is scheduled for March 28 in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court.
