Ever since his childhood, interdisciplinary studies in social science junior Robert Nash has had a passion for wrestling.
“I grew up watching WWE, and I was like ‘I want to wrestle,’” he said.
But his collegiate wrestling career at MSU came to a sudden turn after two years because of his academic struggles.
A competitive person, he has long wanted to be a mixed martial arts, or MMA, fighter upon his graduation. As he reconsidered his path, strengthening his academics for a future return to the wrestling team, participating in MMA fights became a solution.
He met with Matt Torres, owner of East Lansing Underground Martial Arts, of 541 E. Grand River Ave., during an MMA fight. Torres became Nash’s fighting coach, and Nash obtained an 8-0 record.
As he prepares for his return to the MSU wrestling team, he also is preparing for an upcoming MMA fight, with a longer future in mind.
“Just knowing that you are one of the badass people on the planet, that’s sweet,” he said. “Who (wouldn’t) want that?”
