They didn’t arrive at MSU together, but as they huddled together sharing a final group embrace at the center court Spartan logo of Breslin Center on Thursday, Porsche Poole, Taylor Alton and Lykendra Johnson made sure to leave together.

It was an emotional Senior Night for the trio, as the MSU women’s basketball team (18-10 overall, 10-5 Big Ten) shot the lights out to send their seniors out victoriously, beating No. 23 Nebraska 73-53.

No shooter was more prolific than Alton, who finished the game with 18 points, five rebounds and four 3-pointers and said the game was a moment she’ll always remember.

“It’s the last time here, and I think it kind of hit,” Alton said.

“It was probably the best thing that could have happened. … It’s super special to me. (With) all the memories that we’ve had here, to top it off with that one is amazing.”

The Spartans got off to a quick start, thanks to sophomore guard Klarissa Bell, who scored MSU’s first seven points to gain a lead that would never be relinquished.

It was a major turnaround game for Bell, leading the team with 19 points after being urged by Poole to become more aggressive.

“My teammates keep yelling at me to shoot the ball, and in the last game, I wasn’t aggressive enough,” Bell said. “When I’m not aggressive I’m not playing as much. I like to be out there on the floor, and that first shot I took felt good.”

After Bell’s first seven points, Nebraska (20-7, 9-6) cut the deficit to one, but MSU responded with a 25-5 surge to to blow the game open and put the Spartans in front 32-11 with 7:45 to go in the first half.

The prolific shooting of Alton and Bell was contagious in the first half, as MSU shot 18-of-29 (62.1 percent) from the floor and 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from beyond the arc to take a 43-22 halftime lead.

Johnson said she couldn’t remember a game in her five years as a Spartan where her team shot the ball that well, and Poole — who finished the game with 13 points and a team-high nine assists — described it as “Senior Night magic.”

But after opening the second half lackadaisically, it appeared MSU’s magic might run out.

After being outscored 16-9 and seeing the lead dwindle to 12 points, head coach Suzy Merchant was called for a technical foul after an official ruled freshman guard Kiana Johnson wasn’t fouled on a drive to the basket.

Merchant said she only remembers receiving two other technical fouls in her coaching career, and even though it wasn’t her intention, Lykendra Johnson said her coach’s passion rallied the Spartans.

“It gives team’s momentum when the coaches get (technical fouls),” she said. “Today against Nebraska, we stayed composed and that says a lot about our coach.”

MSU went on a 15-3 run after the technical free throws to go ahead 67-45 with 5:34 to play, putting the game out of reach.

And as Merchant stood with her first recruiting class, microphone in hand, following their final game on the Breslin Center floor, she said there’s no doubt the group will always have a special place in her heart.

“There’s a lot of pride you take in kids development and growth,” she said. “They’ve had their trials and tribulations, every single one of them, and the fact they love being Spartans and it means something to them, it’s something that’s inspiring as a coach.”
