Results inconclusive in student death

February 13, 2012

Despite previous suspicions from health officials, results released Monday show Carly Glynn, a sophomore who unexpectedly died last weekend, did not die as a result of meningococcal disease.

Preliminary results show Glynn, who lived in Snyder Hall and passed away Friday morning at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms, did not die from the disease, said Renée Branch Canady, a health officer for the Ingham County Health Department.

While initial results showed Glynn negative for meningococcal disease, Canday said the possibility isn’t entirely ruled out and officials believe the cause of death might have been another type of bacterial infection. Additional testing will provide more information on the cause of her death.

Officials are confident the unknown infection isn’t more contagious than meningococcal disease, as other students have not come down with similar symptoms, Canady said.

“(If it were more contagious) we would have seen people becoming sick, and we’re not seeing people becoming sick,” Canady said.
