ASMSU’s General Assembly continued a discussion on a controversial bill regarding the potential for a smoke-free campus at its Thursday night meeting but ultimately voted to table it for further discussion.
The bill, introduced into the Executive Committee on Student Affairs by Arab Cultural Society representative Monica Shamass last week, would advocate for ASMSU to encourage the university to make MSU a smoke-free campus.
Shamass said the bill does not create the policy itself but advocates for the university to continue looking into the policy.
After more than an hour of back-and-forth on the issue, the assembly voted again to refer the bill back to committee to determine specifics of the bill.
Dissenting the bill was ASMSU College of Business Representative Ben Wernette, who said implementing such a policy would be a limit to students freedoms on campus.
The assembly also voted to appoint interim Vice Chair for Student Programming Evan Martinak to the permanent position overseeing the Programming Board this semester following the resignation of former vice chair Emmanuel Williams.
Martinak defeated programming board directors Chris McClain and Rob Hansen for the post after each candidate delivered a speech and answered a series of questions from the assembly.
Also discussed at the meeting was a bill to advocate for revisions to the university’s anti-discrimination policy, introduced by ASMSU Associate Provost Emily Bank. The bill, which passed by consent, advocates for a standard procedure to be put in place to for handling incidents of discrimination on campus, which requires an investigation to take place by the appropriate office or board.
McClain, who serves on he university’s Anti-Discrimination Judicial Board, said the board reviews cases brought by students, faculty or staff regarding acts of discrimination, but the board has not heard a case in five years. He suggested giving it more authority to hear complaints from students and faculty.
