How to dress up menswear

January 30, 2012

Staff reporter Becca Guajardo explains how to turn a men’s button-up shirt into a trendy top for girls.

Updating your closet can be an expensive and stressful task. Instead of buying a new piece of clothing, new looks can be made within that old closest of yours — or your boyfriend’s.

An oversized men’s dress shirt simply can be tied into a new look. A large flannel top or an oxford works best. The outfit can be used as a top or a dress depending on the length of the shirt.

If you feel up to trying a new look by polishing up an old one, here are step-by-step instructions to do so.

1. Start by wrapping the shirt around your torso so the buttons face the front. Make sure to keep your arms out so the sleeves are by your side.

2. Button from bottom to top leaving the top couple buttons unbuttoned. The amount of buttoning will vary based on your own comfort.

3. Making sure the shirt is centered, pull the top up so it is covering your chest.

4. Using the sleeves, tie them into a bow, like a shoelace, in front of your torso. Make sure it’s tight enough to be secure.

5. Adjust the top to your liking.
