RHA discusses dining hall renovations

November 30, 2011

Students living in East Neighborhood could see upgrades to residence hall dining services in the coming years if a plan to renovate the Akers Hall dining facilities is determined to be feasible.

Associate Director of Residential Dining Bruce Haskell said Akers Hall could undergo a dining hall renovation to add “pizazz” to East Neighborhood dining services.

Haskell spoke to representatives at the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, weekly general assembly meeting Wednesday night in Brody Hall.

He said funds would have to be reallocated from other campus dining hall construction renovations to suit the improvements but said it was too early in planning to determine details. There is no potential time line yet for the project.

Haskell also updated RHA representatives on renovations to Case Hall and said the new dining hall is on track to be open for the spring semester. The dining hall’s construction is the first time a cafeteria has been opened midyear, but it is expected to be ready for students next semester, he said.

RHA Director of Racial, Ethnic and Progressive affairs Kevin Fleury also said RHA plans to launch a new campaign against discrimination, with the working title Active Bystander Campaign.

The group will be a collaboration with other campus ethnic and minority groups and will serve as a combatant to campus discrimination, he said.

“We don’t want it to be RHA’s thing — we want it to be MSU’s thing,” he said.

RHA also discussed upcoming events, including a show tonight featuring comedian Michael Kosta. The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Pasant Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets are $5 for students.

RHA also is hosting a pre-finals week de-stressing event called The Breaking Point at 6 p.m. Friday night in 134 Brody Hall. The event will feature karaoke, massages and craft making, as well as a hypnotist show at 8 p.m. The event is free.
