Weekend roundup: Nov. 18-20

It is almost the weekend. Classes are ending, and students are ready to unwind. Here is a roundup of events to attend during the weekend respite.

Starry Night: Night Hike with a Naturalist:

Woldumar Nature Center, 5739 Old Lansing Road, in Lansing, will host a night hike from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday.

A Woldumar naturalist will lead the hike, giving people a tour of the trails and ending the evening with a campfire next to the center’s Moon Cabin. Woldumar Nature Center features five miles of natural trails, traversing through hardwood forest, prairies and an old apple orchard that hikers will get the chance to explore.

The cost is $2 for members and $3 for non-members.

Nellie McKay’s “I Want to Live!:”

At 8 p.m. Saturday, Nellie Mckay’s new cabaret show “I Want to Live!” will be performed at Wharton Center.

Mckay is a songstress and actress who has released three acclaimed albums of original music and has performed on Broadway, as well as on the big screen.

The show is a musical reconstruction of the 1958 Susan Hayward film about death-row inmate Barbara Graham, who was convicted of murdering a 64-year-old widow Mabel Monohan.

Tickets are $15 for MSU students with a valid ID and $25 for non-students.

Ska/punk show:

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Scumpunch! Productions will present a ska/punk show featuring CbJ, The Loose Ties, Explicit Bombers and St. Thomas Boys Academy at Basement 414, 414 E. Michigan Ave.

Scumpunch! Productions puts together various punk, ska, metal, rock and psychobilly shows in the Lansing area.

The cost is free and all ages are welcome.

Euchre tournament:

The University Activities Board will host a Euchre tournament from 8:45-11 p.m. at the International Center.

Free snacks, candy and drinks will be provided.

The winning team will receive a Nintendo Wii, second-place winners will earn an iHome and third-place winners will get movie passes from NCG Cinema, 2500 Showtime Drive, in Lansing.

There will also be a raffle, which will include prizes, such as a $75 gift card for Spartan Spirit in the Union and movie passes form NCG Cinema.

There is a limit of 128 teams.

Homegrown Throwdown:

The throwdown, a battle of the bands that started on Nov. 4, continues at 8 p.m. Friday at The Loft, 414 E. Michigan Ave, in Lansing, featuring six bands from Lansing, including Fair Enough and State of Havoc.

Fair Enough will start the night off, playing from 8:05-8:30 p.m. The last performance is by DeverauX from 11:05-11:30 p.m.

One band from this performance will advance to the finals on Dec. 9. Judging is based on ticket pre-sales, crowd votes and judges scores.

All ages are welcome to attend and $6 advance $8 at the door.
