Soccer team falls short to Indiana

November 10, 2011

The MSU men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinals.

The Spartans fell behind 2-0 in the first 47 minutes before netting a goal in the 81st minute.

The Hoosiers netted the first goal in the 38th minute with a shot from about 22 yards out. The second Hoosier goal came in the 47th minute when another ball made it past senior goalie Jeremy Clark.

The Spartans had several chances late in the second half and found the net when freshman forward Adam Montague headed in a senior midfielder Cyrus Saydee corner kick.

Hoosier goalie Luis Soffner made three saves, while Clark countered with one in an effort to keep MSU close. Indiana outshot MSU 15-11.

The Spartans end the season 7-8-4, including a 5-1-2 record and an upset of defending national champion Akron in the last eight regular season games to end the season.

“I thought that today, we executed our game plan pretty well in the first half. Their goal was a professional finish from a great player,” said head coach Damon Rensing in a release from MSU Athletics.

“Their goal early in the second half deflated us a little bit, but I thought we regrouped pretty well.

“We had our chances — (senior forward) Rubin (Bega) has that shot off the crossbar before they even scored, (senior midfielder) Brent Rosendall has a great look late in the game. It didn’t happen for us, but I’m very happy and proud of our team for the way that they performed today.”
