LBGT bills pass Senate committee

October 19, 2011

A bill that would strip public institutions’, including MSU, right to offer benefits to employees in same-sex partnerships was passed by a Senate committee Wednesday and is one vote from passing the legislature.

The bill has been met with opposition from LBGT advocates both on and off campus. Republicans supporting the bill have said it is designed to uphold Michigan and federal law, which does not recognize same-sex marriage.

The bill first passed through the House in September after being introduced by Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville.
