State Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, was found guilty of violating House rules yesterday, after endorsing Susan Schmidt as a candidate for the 69th district seat in a constituent email newsletter late last month, according to Ari Adler, the press secretary for Speaker of the House Jase Bolger, R-Marshall.
It is against House rules to use government resources for campaign purposes, Tim Bowlin, Business Director of the House Business Office, said in an earlier interview.
Meadows was given a list of reprimands Tuesday, which include barring him from printing or emailing newsletters for 60 days and reimbursing the House with a $35 distribution cost. The letter also is being forwarded to the Secretary of State’s office to be assessed for campaign finance law violations, Adler said.
If he is found guilty of campaign finance law violations, Meadows could see additional fines. But Fred Woodhams, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of State, previously told The State News they would only look into the matter if a complaint was filed by a constituent.
The House Business Office, a non-partisan office that reviews house rules, sent a letter to Meadows yesterday informing him of the fines, Adler said.
