Field hockey beats Central Michigan

September 21, 2011

As the MSU football team prepares to take on Central Michigan this weekend, another group of Spartans took on the Chippewas on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite being outshot 10 to 7, the Spartans (4-5) left Mount Pleasant with a victory, defeating Central Michigan 2-1.

MSU fell behind early in the game when the Chippewas’ Paulina Lee scored the first goal about nine minutes into the match.

However, the Spartans rallied after the halftime, as junior midfielder Adelle Lever capitalized on a penalty corner two minutes into the second half to tie the game at one. Sophomore midfielder Katherine Jamieson scored the go-ahead goal with 17 minutes remaining in the game, and the Spartans maintained the lead until the final whistle. The goal was the first of the season for Jamieson.

Sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy recorded five saves in the victory, and freshman midfielder Alli Helwig led the team in both shots and shots on goal with two in each category.

The Spartans will continue play on the road Friday when they open Big Ten play against Iowa. On Sunday the team will return to East Lansing to host head coach Helen Knull’s alma mater Kent State — where she was a two-time All-American field hockey player — at Ralph Young Field for its first home game of the season.
