Former MSU rower wins gold with Canada

Recent MSU graduate Laura Cowal competed for Canada in the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam Sunday, bringing home gold in the women’s eight boat.

In the championships’ Grand Final, Cowal pushed Canada to finish ahead of New Zealand with a winning time of 6:03.23. New Zealand finished for silver with a time of 6:06.02, while the U.S. — defending world champions in the event — finished in third at 6:07.37.

Cowal finished her career at MSU as the Big Ten Athlete of the Year and earned First Team All-Big Ten and All-American accolades. She also was part of four consecutive Big Ten Varsity Eight titles.
