An ejector pump drains water and waste from buildings.
It is unknown what caused the pump to overheat, but the malfunction created clouds of smoke and caused water to back up in several rooms, Nakfoor said. There was not an actual fire, he said.
A physical plant worker was called to fix the pump, MSU police Sgt. Andrea Beasinger said.
About 12 East Lansing firefighters responded to the call and quickly cleared the smoke, Nakfoor said.
MSU police officers also responded to the call and assisted the firefighters.
The cost of the damage is unknown at this point, but one or two rooms were flooded because of the pump malfunction, Nakfoor said.
