Women's rowing finishes fourth, varsity eight boat makes history

May 15, 2011

As Ohio State captured the Big Ten title, the MSU women’s rowing team earned a fourth place finish at the Big Ten Championships, and the varsity eight made a mark in the MSU history books by winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive title, finishing with a time of 6:17.12.

As a member of each championship boat, senior Laura Cowal earned her fourth varsity eight gold medal, and for junior Amanda McGeachie and senior Kellie LaPointe, the victory marked their third gold medals in the boat. It also is senior Stephanie Bochenek’s second varsity eight gold medal.

Cowal finishes her Spartan career as the only athlete in Big Ten history to win four varsity eight gold medals.

MSU’s varsity four and second varsity four both finished in fourth place, and the team’s second varsity eight, novice eight and second novice eight came in fifth.

Cowal, Bochenek and LaPointe earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, while McGeachie and senior Alex Maibusch received Second Team All-Big Ten honors.

On Tuesday, the Spartans will learn if they have a bid to the NCAA Championship regatta, which will begin May 27 in Sacramento, Calif.
