Anastos hires assistants

April 25, 2011

MSU hockey head coach Tom Anastos completed his coaching staff Monday by announcing the hiring of two new assistant coaches, while retaining assistant coach Tom Newton and video coordinator Adam Nightingale.

Anastos announced that former Spartan player Kelly Miller, who was interviewed by athletic director Mark Hollis for the head coaching position prior to Anastos’ hiring, will join Newton as a full-time assistant and former MSU goalie Mike Gilmore will serve as a volunteer assistant.

Miller ranks in a tie for 25th among MSU’s all-time scoring leaders in playing with Anastos from 1981-85 and played 15 seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals. He also served as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders.

Gilmore, who will work with the goaltenders, appeared in 64 career games for MSU as a goalie from 1989 through 1992, and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Spartans from 1994-96.

Newton is entering his 22nd season as a Spartans’ assistant and has been to four Frozen Fours.
