Universities discuss higher education

March 23, 2011

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon was in Lansing on Wednesday to give her take on the university’s role in the state’s economy before the House higher education appropriations subcommittee.

Gov. Rick Snyder last month proposed to reduce higher education funding by up to 22 percent for the fiscal year to begin in October. Should that proposal remain intact, MSU could be out $61 million.

Simon acknowledged the state’s precarious financial situation during her remarks.

“(MSU) is prepared to take its share of pain,” she said. “We do this with the expectation that the era of state retreat from support for public higher education will finally come to a close.”
