MSU reaches one-third recycling rate

March 1, 2011

Whether it’s paper or plastic, the RecycleMania competition continues at MSU.

RecycleMania is an eight-week competition among more than 600 schools across the country to promote recycling awareness on college campuses. The competition began Feb. 6 and will go until April 2.

MSU is competing for the Grand Champion prize and the Gorilla Prize, two categories of the competition. The Grand Champion ranks schools through a calculated percentage after combining trash and recycled materials, called the recycling rate.

As of the second week ending Feb. 19, MSU had a 33.64 percent recycling rate, which was good enough for an 82nd national ranking, according to the MSU Recycling website. As far as the six Big Ten competitors, MSU was second behind Purdue University.

The Gorilla Prize measures the highest gross weight of recycled material on campus. Through two weeks, MSU amassed 178,961 pounds, short of its 1 million pound goal. MSU was ranked 12th nationally.
The latest numbers were not available Tuesday.
