ELPD citations increase with St. Patrick's Day activity

March 18, 2011

Between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, 180 citations were issued and 31 arrests were made by the East Lansing Police Department.

Those numbers include 50 traffic violations and several arrests made from warrants issued prior to Thursday, East Lansing police Capt. Tom Johnstone said.

Johnstone said overall this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were fairly typical. The MSU men’s basketball team’s first round loss in the NCAA tournament added to the amount of activity in the city but said that activity is something East Lansing has dealt with in the past, Johnston said.

“A lot of people had a great time and did so responsibly,” he said.

“Some people weren’t responsible, but they were in the minority.”

Of the 180 citations, 30 were for minor in possession of alcohol, 17 were for disorderly conduct and several were issued as party liter warnings that can be resolved if the home owner or tenant takes care of refuse in a timely fashion, Johnstone said.

Arrests made by the ELPD included seven disorderly conducts and 11 for minor in possession of alcohol.

“A lot of people were out because of the warm weather,” Johnstone said.
