A flurry of third-period goals lifted the MSU hockey team to a 4-0 win at Lake Superior State on Friday.
The Spartans scored all four goals in the third period, as they broke a five-period goalless streak in seeing three different players score.
Junior forward Daultan Leveille scored an unassisted goal 5:45 into the third, then sophomore forward Dean Chelios added an even-strength goal about seven minutes later.
Junior forward and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario-native Brett Perlini scored goals at 13:58 and 15:50 of the third period, and freshman goaltender Will Yanakeff stopped all 24 shots that came his way.
Sophomore forward Derek Grant had two assists, as MSU put 31 shots on goal, which helped it bounce back from last Saturday’s 4-0 loss at No. 7 Michigan.
After having been shut out in three of its last four CCHA games, MSU will hope its four-goal period to carry over for Saturday’s game at Lake Superior State, set for 7 p.m.
Friday’s first two periods produced only 37 total shots and no goals, but MSU capitalized on a Lakers’ penalty 4:28 into the period to set up Leveille’s goal.
The win improves the Spartans’ record to 9-11-3 and 5-9-1 in conference, while the Lakers fall to 6-11-4 and 4-8-3.
