For the second year in a row, the MSU wrestling team hosted the Spartan Duals on Saturday, inviting four nonconference foes into the confines of Jenison Field House.

MSU started the day much as it did at last year’s Spartan Duals: with a victory. In this one, they beat Lock Haven 28-12, after being down by as much as six early on. That was one of three team wins for MSU on the day.

“We came in with a rash of injuries. … Our mission was to have everybody step up and just get the job done,” head coach Tom Minkel said.

MSU sophomore Dan Osterman, junior Eric Olanowski and senior Ben Boudro earned three-point decisions in each of their respective weight classes against Lock Haven, and juniors Ian Hinton and Curran Jacobs scored four points each as a result of their major decision victories over their opponents.

Redshirt freshman heavyweight Mike McClure was the only Spartan wrestler to pin his opponent in MSU’s first match, while junior Tyler Dickenson secured an automatic five points with a 15-0 win.

Having survived an early Lock Haven pin, MSU found themselves down 12-9 heading into Jacobs’ tilt with Michael Khoury. Jacobs battled to a 3-3 tie before a series of quick moves put him on top for good, 13-5.

“His strength and his speed diminished over time,” Jacobs said.

“By the second period, I heard him panting. … He (got tired) out there.”

MSU’s winning ways continued in its second match against Oakland.

The Spartans won that contest, 45-0, behind seven victories from MSU grapplers.

MSU was aided by young wrestlers in that contest. In his first action of the day, freshman Robert Nash beat Oakland’s Mike Wranosky, 9-2, and redshirt freshman Nick Kaczanowski pinned Zack Voller.

Olanowski and Osterman also secured four points each in winning major decisions over their Oakland opponents.

“I wanted to go into today and wrestle the way I know how to wrestle,” Olanowski said.

Their final match was the closest, with three of the 10 individual matches decided by one point, as MSU narrowly escaped Eastern Michigan, 19-15.

Osterman, Dickenson, Jacobs, Hinton and Boudro also beat their Eastern Michigan opponents for the Spartans, who move to 7-1 in dual meets on the season.
