Lady hoops tie best start in history

December 22, 2010

The No. 12 MSU women’s basketball team rolled over Vermont, 67-33, on their way to a 12-1 record, tying the 2004-05 squad for the best start in school history.

In their final tune-up game before entering the Big Ten conference schedule, the Spartans (12-1) blew out Vermont (0-10) and won their tenth consecutive game.

Again MSU swarmed the ball on defense and allowed few open opportunities for the Catamounts. For the first six minutes, Vermont was held without a field goal (0-10).

MSU overpowered Catamounts, especially under the rim. The Spartans, led by junior forward Lykendra Johnson’s 14 points, outscored Vermont 42-14 in the paint.

Along with her 14 points, Johnson also pulled in four rebounds. Freshman guard Klarissa Bell finished right behind her teammate with a season-high 12 points.

With only 33 points, the Catamounts did not have anything going right for them offensively. No player on the team scored in double digits and Vermont only shot about 28 percent for the game.

MSU’s will open up the Big Ten schedule on Jan. 2 when they welcome Illinois to Breslin Center.
