Despite a late rally, the MSU hockey team lost the opening game of the Great Lakes Invitational, 5-4, against Colorado College on Wednesday night.
Colorado College (12-8-2) took 1-0 lead with 7:52 left in the first period, but MSU (6-10-3) tied it up three minutes later when freshman forward Lee Reimer netted his first career goal.
The Tigers took back their lead a minute later and added a third goal 4:15 into the second period with a goal from forward Andrew Hamburg.
Two more Tiger goals followed in the second, countered only by a goal for MSU from senior forward Dustin Gazley.
Junior defenseman Brock Shelgren scored with a shot form the right point 6:15 into the third to bring the Spartans back to a two-goal deficit.
MSU pulled to within a goal with 48 seconds to play with a goal from junior forward Daultan Leveille, but was unable to find the net for the equalizer in the last minute.
The Spartans outshot the Tigers 35-23 in the game. Spartan goalie, junior Drew Palmisano, was pulled with 8:50 left in the game.
MSU will play the loser of Wednesday night’s matchup between No. 10 Michigan and Michigan Tech.
