Research station to get new name

December 6, 2010

The Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, or MAES, officially will become MSU AgBioResearch at the turn of the new year.

MSU AgBioResearch Director Steve Pueppke said the name change has been approved by the MSU Board of Trustees and said the office is in a transition period.

Although no major changes are being made in the office, Pueppke said the name will help freshen and update the image of the current Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.

“The old name … sometimes led to confusion as to where we were even located,” he said.
“It sounded like we were at a location away from MSU.”

MAES funds research in six colleges on campus: The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Engineering, the College of Social Science, the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the College of Natural Science. University research funded by MAES focuses on solving problems related to food, agriculture, natural resources and energy in the state of Michigan, Pueppke said.

The name change will include changes to stationary, business cards, signs and other written materials, but will not require any kind of significant funding, he said.

“Those things get changed all the time anyway,” Pueppke said. “This will be pretty simple to do.”
