ASMSU to discuss iclicker rentals

November 4, 2010

ASMSU is hoping to have an iClicker rental program up and running by spring semester.

Academic Assembly internal vice chairman Zach Taylor said he’ll be introducing a bill to set up the iClicker program at Tuesday’s Academic Assembly meeting and expects it to pass.

If it passes, the group would buy between 50 to 150 iClickers to start as rentals.

“The main limiting factor is the cost for us,” Taylor said.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Taylor said ASMSU will discuss where to pull the money from at its Tuesday meeting, but said it possibly could come from the assembly chairperson’s discretionary fund.

His plan is to charge students about $30 to rent an iClicker. At the end of the semester, students could return the iClicker for a full refund, Taylor said.

“IClickers are one of those things that I think kind of symbolizes the contradiction with our education system,” Taylor said. “The youth are our country’s greatest resource, but we burden our youth with so much debt that it almost makes it impossible to get an education sometimes.”

One of the locations where iClickers are sold is the Student Book Store, 421 E. Grand River Ave. The iClickers sell for $37.58, assistant manager Mike Wylie said. The store usually buys them back for about half that amount, he added.

“Personally for myself, I tell people when they buy it that before they sell it back, they should make sure they don’t need it for another class,” Wylie said.

The iClickers are used for classes across the board at MSU — from physics to telecommunications, Wylie said. The devices can be used for multiple classes as long as students make sure they keep the bar code on the back, he said.
The price of iClickers has stayed steady for the past few years, Wylie said.

“Certainly people should try to do whatever they can do to save a student money,” Wylie said.

Food industry management senior Steve Koch said he wouldn’t use the program now because he’s graduating this year, but he would have as an underclassman to save some money.

Koch said he’s currently borrowing an iClicker.

“Mine broke, so it’s a waste of $40,” Koch said. “That happened freshman year, and I’m pretty sure there’s no warranty to cover it.”

ASMSU sent out a survey to all students earlier this week and already have received about 1,500 responses, Taylor said.

Of the responses, about 95 percent indicated they would use the rental program.

“Of the 5 percent that said they wouldn’t use it, most said it was just because (they) already had (an iClicker),” Taylor said.
