Sophomore Smith earns women's cross country honor

October 13, 2010

Sophomore cross country runner Kristen Smith earned Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors after finishing fifth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Smith completed the 5-kilometer course with a time of 18:17, beating her previous career-best time by more than a minute.

The Clarkston, Mich., native led the No. 18 Spartans to a fifth place finish and also claimed All-Michigan honors for her performance.

This is the third time in 2010 a Spartan has been named the week’s best runner, with senior Emily MacLeod winning it both other times.

Redshirt freshman Veronica Wilson placed 17th and was the next Spartan to finish with a time of 18:51.

Finishing first, at 17:16, was Eastern Michigan’s Courtney Calka.
