MSU cohosts stem cell conference

October 5, 2010

The three-day conference of the sixth annual World Stem Cell Summit concludes today in Detroit. The summit brought together educators, doctors and presentations to collaborate on the issue.

Organizers expected more than 1,200 participants from 30 nations, in addition to 60 exhibitors and more than 200 global organizations, according to the summit’s website.

With more than 50 hours of presentations, participants had multiple opportunities to interact with each other.

On Aug. 23, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth issued an order temporarily
stopping the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and the National Institutes of Health from funding or conducting studies in stem cell research, according to Bloomberg.

The ruling was reversed Sept. 29 by the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Calls to organizers and participants in the summit were not returned.

Presenters said if the state contains a strong public-private partnership in addition to advanced stem cell research, companies that aim to succeed in the field should have no problem doing so, according to Melissa Burden of The Detroit News.

The Genetics Policy Institute, “a leading promoter and defender of stem cell research,” presented the conference, according to the website. State officials, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, MSU, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University each co-hosted the event.
