A $190 million investment by General Motors Corp. will bring about 600 new jobs into the Lansing area through production of a new luxury car designed by GM, according to Wednesday statement by Lansing Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero.
General Motors Corp. CEO Dan Akerson, United Auto Workers President Bob King, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and several state and local elected officials will gather today at Lansing Grand River Assembly, 510 Olds Ave., in Lansing, to make a “positive news announcement” for the community and the plant, GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter said.
Although she said she couldn’t confirm details, Carpenter said the investment will be larger than one announced last week at GM’s Lansing Delta Township plant, which totaled about $37 million.
Bernero said in his statement that the investment is a product of his work throughout many months. Bernero could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Carpenter said the Lansing plant is valuable to GM because of the work it contributes.
“The reality is that our two newest assembly plants are here in Lansing,” Carpenter said. “Our manufacturing abilities in this region are strong. We have tremendous work force here with an outstanding work ethic.”
Mike Green, president of the United Auto Workers Local 652, said he wasn’t sure of any details and did not want to speculate.
“I want to hear at the same time that my membership does,” Green said. “They’re the ones that have made it possible. I don’t want to spoil it. It’s like peeking before Christmas morning.”
About 1,100 employees currently work at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant, Carpenter said.
“The products we make in this community are very important to General Motors,” she said.
