Less men believe in global warming

September 15, 2010

According to a new study by Aaron McCright, MSU associate professor of sociology, women are more likely than men to accept the scientific theories behind global warming.

McCright’s study was published in the September edition of “Population and Environment,” and is one of the first in its field to look at this topic, according to a statement from MSU.

McCright believes that the results of the study are explained by gender socialization, meaning women, who are more likely to stress empathy and care, give more thought to the state of the environment whereas men are more likely to stress detachment and control.

Data from the study was taken from Gallup’s annual environment poll which asks general questions about climate change.
