MSU football sophomore tight end Dion Sims has been suspended from team-related activities due to legal issues, MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said in a statement released Tuesday.
According to a press release from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Sims, along with nine other men, have been charged in connection with an organized scheme to steal and fence laptop computers from Detroit Public Schools from December of 2009 through 2010.
The investigation revealed that about 104 computers were stolen, valued at $158,000, the press release said.
Sims has been charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.
“Since mid-February, we have been aware that Dion Sims and members of his extended family have been dealing with some legal issues,” Hollis said in the statement. “Dion informed the coaching staff of the police investigation and has kept them apprised of the progress of the investigation.
“Dion did not participate in the first three regular-season games, and as of today, he has been suspended from football team-related activities due to these issues. During his indefinite suspension, Dion will continue to have access to all of the available resources in the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center. We will allow the legal process to play out before we make any final decision regarding his future status with the team.”
Last season, Sims caught 11 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. He has not played this season.
