Assembly elects new chairperson

September 12, 2010

ASMSU’s Student Assembly will be working to strengthen its relationship with other student government groups under the direction of new chairperson Christopher Schotten.

Schotten, a political theory and constitutional democracy senior, was elected as chairperson Thursday night, filling the seat vacated by interim chairperson Kyle Dysarz on Sept. 1 after newly elected chairperson Eric Branoff resigned in the spring to accept a scholarship to study abroad.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

“I wish you the best of luck for this coming year,” Dysarz, who was present during the elections, said.

Schotten said he hopes to partner with other student organizations to pursue new opportunities for serving students.

“As chair, I would like to work with the Academic Assembly to foster continued cooperation between assemblies and form formal and informal interactions between other student groups,” Schotten said, including the Council of Graduate Students and Residence Halls Association.

Political theory and constitutional democracy senior Steve Marino, who serves as the Student Assembly’s external vice chairperson, and philosophy junior Victor Draine, the assembly’s vice chairperson for programming, also vied for the position.

One of Schotten’s achievements as the assembly’s former vice chairperson of internal affairs was helping to develop the Spartan Armed Forces Council, a group that aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere for MSU veterans, military personnel and their families, he said.

He also worked to refine the way ASMSU operates by improving availability and accessibility, he said.

“I worked tirelessly to improve relationships with university officials and departments, especially (the Department of) Residence Life,” Schotten said.

If confronted with opposition from the administration, Schotten said he will not hesitate to fight for student rights.

“With open dialogue, I believe we can work out a compromise for the good of the students,” Schotten said.

Before the elections, Matt York, Student Assembly’s vice chair for internal affairs, said it was important for whoever was elected to be able to hit the ground running and build on the group’s headway from the previous semesters.

“We made a lot of positive progress last year,” York said.

Elizabeth Brumfield, ASMSU spokeswoman, expressed similar feelings.
“We’re just looking for someone who will have the students’ interest, is responsible and reliable and will get the job done,” she said.
