2 Spartans named to national award watch lists

August 11, 2010

Two MSU soccer players have been named to national award watch lists for the 2010 season.

Men’s soccer senior goalkeeper Avery Steinlage and women’s soccer junior forward Laura Heyboer have been named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch Lists, considered the highest honor in intercollegiate soccer.

Steinlage is a two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection and ranks as one of the best goalies in MSU history.

“This is a fantastic honor for Avery,” men’s soccer head coach Damon Rensing said in a release. “He’s performed well and will be a leader for us this season. It’s nice that both he and Laura are getting this recognition — it is a testament to what they have achieved so far, and it’s also fantastic for Michigan State to have two players of their caliber be recognized.”

Heyboer is a two-time All-American and she ranks sixth all-time at MSU in points entering her junior year.

“We’re thrilled for Laura that she has received this well-earned distinction, and I know that she’s anxious to get back on the field after having her sophomore season cut short,” women’s soccer head coach Tom Saxton said in a release.
