The last known wild wolverine in Michigan was found dead about 60 miles northwest of Port Huron on Saturday and will be examined on MSU’s campus, according to The Detroit News.
A female estimated to be 7 years old at the time of death, the wolverine was first seen in 2004, 90 miles north of Detroit.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resoures and Environment, or DNRE, will perform a necropsy on the wolverine at the MSU Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Center, where the DNRE has an office. However, MSU personnel will not be involved, MSU spokesman Jason Cody said.
The animal eventually will be mounted for display in the Bay City State Recreation Area.
Before this animal was seen, the last confirmed sighting of a wild wolverine in Michigan was nearly 200 years ago, according to The Detroit News.
Wolverines still can be found in Canada, Idaho and Alaska.
