A 26-year-old female visiting scholar from Beijing, who was pulled out of a pool on campus last week for unknown reasons, died Wednesday from unknown causes.
Na Yu, a visiting scholar from Beijing conducting research in the College of Education, died shortly after midnight Wednesday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
The cause of death remains unknown.
Yu was swimming at IM Sports-Circle on Feb. 26 and was pulled from the pool for unknown reasons, McGlothian-Taylor said.
Police responded to a call around 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 26. Yu suffered from unknown complications and was transferred to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital, McGlothian-Taylor said.
According to the Ingham County Medical Examiner’s Office, an initial autopsy report was not available because the incident still is under investigation.
McGlothian-Taylor said an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. As of Thursday, police still were awaiting autopsy results.
“There does not seem to be any suspicion of foul play,” McGlothian-Taylor said.
Yu was visiting from a university in Beijing and has been at MSU since August 2009. She was working in the College of Education, Director of the Office for International Students and Scholars Peter Briggs said.
“She had been working on a special project that is a joint research project with the College of Education dealing with math and science,” Briggs said.
