Absentee ballot applications due

February 9, 2010

Absentee ballots are available for voters as Feb. 23 elections draw near.

People must submit absentee ballot applications by 2 p.m. Feb. 20. Absentee ballots can be received in person until 4 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Secretary of State branch office, 400 Albert Ave.

Registered voters may obtain an absentee ballot if they are 60 years or older, cannot get to the polls without assistance, are out of town all of Election Day, in jail awaiting arraignment or trial, cannot make it to the polls for religious reasons or are working as an election inspector at a precinct other than the voter’s area of residence.

People who registered to vote by mail or a voter registration drive and have never voted in Michigan cannot vote absentee, unless they are overseas, disabled or 60 years old or more.

Emergency absentee ballots can be obtained under certain qualifications until 4 p.m. Feb. 23.
