Council to discuss taxi parking

January 25, 2010

The East Lansing City Council will discuss adding more taxi stations in the downtown area during its 7 p.m. Tuesday work session at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

The Taxicab Task Force decided moving taxi stands back to Albert Avenue was the most viable solution to many taxi-related problems. The committee recommended converting the 100-200 block of Albert Avenue into taxi stands with no commercial spaces between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m., establishing two new stands across from Harpers Restaurant & Brewpub, 131 Albert Ave., and creating six stands on the 300 block of Albert Avenue beginning at Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar, 360 Albert Ave., and stopping across from the Michigan Flyer bus stop.

Two alternate taxi stand locations were rejected for various reasons. Business owners responded negatively to a proposed taxi stand in the Lot 1 alley that runs between Grand River Avenue and Albert Avenue between M.A.C. Avenue and Abbot Road, and the alley behind the Grove Street Ramp was deemed unsuitable because of problems accessing parking behind businesses near the ramp.
