Volleyball team struggles in ill., falls to 16-10

November 8, 2009

The MSU volleyball team fell twice in Illinois this weekend, dropping matches to Northwestern and No. 5 Illinois 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.

The Spartans won the first set Friday against Northwestern, but lost the next three.

Junior outside hitter Megan Schatzle led the team Friday with 15 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Kyndra Abron and senior middle blocker Mischelle Nelson each recorded 11 kills.

Illinois won a tough first set Saturday against the Spartans and didn’t look back. Sophomore setter Natalie Emro tallied 23 assists and defensive leaders junior Allyson Karaba and freshman Cheyenne VanDerSteen combined for 21 digs.

Although MSU had defeated both of the weekend’s opponents earlier in the season, it was unable to do it on the road against the Wildcats and Fighting Illini.

The Spartans fall to 4-10 in the Big Ten and 16-10 overall and will face a more difficult road in climbing higher in the Big Ten standings.

“If you look at the Big Ten, clearly the teams anywhere from second through ninth and almost even 11th are up for grabs right now,” head coach Cathy George said last week. “I don’t feel that any team is really safe in its position.”

MSU returns to action at home Friday with a match against Indiana.
