Illinois football head coach Ron Zook announced Monday that senior quarterback Juice Williams has been benched in favor of junior Eddie McGee for Saturday’s game against MSU. Williams has made 38 consecutive starts and became Illinois’ career leader in total yards last weekend.
Williams only has thrown one touchdown pass this season, with four interceptions. He is last in the Big Ten in passing efficiency.
Williams, a prized recruit four years ago, is the most experienced quarterback in the Big Ten.
McGee is 19-for-30 passing for 211 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. McGee led the team to its only victory of the season, a 45-17 victory against Illinois State, after Williams was injured in the first quarter.
Williams led the Illini to the Rose Bowl in 2008.
