Spartan receives freshman honor

October 19, 2009

Following a two-goal performance Friday at Iowa, MSU field hockey freshman midfielder Adelle Lever has earned Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honors.

Lever scored off a deflection in the first half to give the No. 8 Spartans a 1-0 lead. She scored her second goal just before half to push MSU to a 3-0 lead it would hold the rest of the way.

The honor marks Lever’s first of her career. A freshman from Blue Bell, Pa., Lever scored her second and third goals of the season Friday.

Fellow freshman Manouk Vernij has claimed the award three times this season. The Spartans earned a shutout in holding Iowa to just one shot on goal and one corner.

MSU is 12-3 on the season and has a 3-0 start in the Big Ten. The Spartans return to action this weekend as No. 19 Ohio State and Michigan travel to East Lansing. Both games will air on Big Ten Network after a tape delay.
