After winning two games this weekend and capturing the program’s first-ever outright Big Ten championship, the No. 8 MSU field hockey team saw two of its players earn weekly honors from the conference for their efforts.
Senior midfielder Floor Rijpma was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore back Holly Sherman was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
Rijpma gave her team a 1-0 lead Friday against No. 15 Ohio State, then added a second half score and posted six shots on goal Sunday against Michigan.
It is her third Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Rijpma converted the game-winning goal on a pass from junior forward Jantine Steinmetz that clinched the Big Ten title Sunday for the Spartans.
She leads the team in points (33) and goals (15).
Rijpma’s 51 career goals are third all-time in Spartan field hockey history.
Sherman earned her first career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade and was a key member of the Spartans’ defense that limited its opponents to a goal apiece in a pair of 2-1 wins this weekend.
MSU earned 10 weekly honors this season, more than any other conference team.
The Spartans are 5-0 in the Big Ten and 14-3 overall and finish their regular season schedule this weekend with a road match against Penn State.
