Saturday’s men’s basketball Green and White game meant ditto in the win and loss column, but provided fans with a first-hand look at some of the team’s biggest story lines entering the season.
First, there was sophomore guard Korie Lucious, who was sidelined for most of the offseason with a broken foot, but got back into rhythm with nine points and six assists for the White team, which fell 78-71.
“Considering he hasn’t played in six and a half months, I thought he did a pretty good job,” head coach Tom Izzo said.
“I was impressed with his conditioning, I was impressed with his quickness and I was impressed that he still shot the ball pretty well.”
Lucious had five turnovers, however, an area where Izzo said he could improve.
Redshirt junior Tom Herzog, a candidate for playing time at center, provided one of the afternoon’s biggest plays when he came swooping in for a put-back slam dunk late in the first half that set off a large cheer from the Breslin Center crowd that filled much of the lower bowl.
Herzog, who had eight points and six rebounds in 29 minutes of play, is competing with freshmen Derrick Nix and Garrick Sherman to fill the void left by departed big men Goran Suton, Marquise Gray and Idong Ibok.
“I kind of feel like a different player,” Herzog said. “I feel a lot stronger and I feel like my shot’s better.”
Nix and Sherman also had their moments and should make for an interesting race to see who can fill in on the inside for the inexperienced frontcourt trio.
“I thought the bigs did a good job,” Izzo said. “(They’re) not where they need to be, but all three did some things at times and you can build on that, and that’s what I think is important.”
Nix had six points and seven rebounds on 3-of-9 shooting, while Sherman contributed five points and six rebounds.
The Green team got off to a fast start and opened with a 12-6 lead highlighted by two 3-pointers from junior point guard Kalin Lucas and dunks by Herzog and senior forward Raymar Morgan.
The Green team’s starting lineup — comprised of Lucas, Morgan, Herzog, junior guard Chris Allen and sophomore forward Delvon Roe — is a potential starting lineup for MSU this season.
Some players switched teams at halftime, with the White team leading 42-41.
Chris Allen led all scorers on the day with 22 points, while Lucas added 19 points and seven assists for the Green team. Sophomore forward Draymond Green finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Senior guard Isaiah Dahlman was 6-of-9 for 18 points in the game.
The Spartans’ team chemistry was a little sluggish as the players took the floor together for one of the first times since last season’s Final Four run in Detroit, but the Spartans shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 44.8 percent from behind the arc.
Lucas opened the scrimmage with a 3-pointer, followed by another deep ball from junior guard Durrell Summers for the White team on its first possession.
“We’ve just got to keep playing hard and everybody’s got to keep their confidence up,” Lucas said. “Our main focus is while we keep playing defense, we’ve got to push the ball a little bit better.”
The Spartans, hoping to defend their Big Ten regular season championship, will open their schedule Nov. 1 with an exhibition game against Northwood.
