Costumes made cheap, easy

October 27, 2009

Political science senior Dan Burns models one of the inexpensive costume ideas that can be created around a pair of glasses.

With Halloween only a couple of days away, students aren’t only stressing about their homework, but their costumes, too. So to help ease your mind, here are some ideas for last-minute costumes you can easily create at home, and on a budget.

For the ladies

Five costumes you can make with a white dress.

Everyone has that one dress in their closet begging to be used for something. Here are some personas you can create with a simple white dress — no matter what style you’re looking for.

1. Greek Goddess: Curl your hair and doll yourself up with fake leaves (or if you want to get really original, you can pick some off a tree outside) and gold ribbon. Put on some gold eyeshadow, gold shoes, earrings and a necklace. Top it off by adding some gold ribbon to your dress.

2. Wilma Flintstone: If it’s an old dress, cut V’s into the bottom to give it a jagged rim. Put your hair in a bun on top of your head, and complete the look with big white pearls. If your friend has an orange wig, it can bring your costume to the next level.

3. Marilyn Monroe: Curl your hair, put on some red lipstick, slip on a pair of tall white heels and call it a night.

4. Angel: Buy (or borrow) a pair of wings. This is one outfit you can jazz up with your own ideas, no matter how crazy, to add character to the simple costume.

5. Medusa: Buy a couple of little fake snakes and make your hair as big as possible. Tease it, curl it — the more volume the better. Bobby pin in some fake snakes and go overboard with the green makeup.

For the Gentlemen

Five costumes you can make with glasses.

You think glasses only look good on sexy librarians? Not this year.

1. Harry Potter: Wrap some tape around the center of glasses and grab a red marker to give yourself that signature lightning bolt on your forehead. Go outside and pick a tree branch for your wand. Dress yourselves in a black robe and you are ready for some magic.

2. Dwight Schrute from “The Office”: Put on a short-sleeved green or blue button-up shirt, a tie your dad would wear to work and a suit. Part your hair down the center, ask your girlfriend to borrow some hair spray, and if anything goes wrong that night, it’s your cue to say, “I suspect Jim Halpert” to everything.

3. John Lennon: If your hair is long, then this will be no problem, if not, buy a wig. For clothes, just remember if a hippie would wear it, so can you. For a plus, bring out a guitar and serenade the ladies with “All You Need is Love.” If you rock a British accent, you don’t even have to play the guitar — just holding it will make all the girls wanna hold your hand.

4. Clark Kent/Superman: Comb your hair. Shave. Wear a classy suit and don’t forget the shiny shoes. Go to a store and purchase a cheap Superman T-shirt. Wear it under your suit and when someone asks who you are, say “Clark,” but wink and flash them a glance of the classic Superman “S.”

5. A Nerd: Gel you hair until it’s stiff. Any shirt will do, as long as the pants you wear are above your waist and include suspenders. If your shirt has a pocket, stuff it with pencils.
