Women's basketball captains named

MSU women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced Monday that seniors Lauren Aitch, Allyssa DeHaan, Aisha Jefferson and Mandy Piechowski were selected as team captains for the 2009-10 season.

Aitch, a first time captain, has been honored as the team’s Sixth Player of the Year the past two seasons. Last season, the 6-foot-1 center came off the bench to average 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds a game.

Like Aitch, DeHaan also is a first time captain. She enters her final season ranked in the program’s top 10 in points and rebounds and also is the Big Ten’s all-time blocked shots leader. The three-time All-Big Ten selection was second on the team last season with 10.8 points per game, while leading the Spartans with 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.

Jefferson becomes the fifth Spartan to be named a three-time captain. In 2008, she led the team in scoring with 11.1 points per game, along with averaging 5.3 rebounds a game.

Piechowski is entering her second season as captain. The 5-foot-9 guard led the team in 3-point field goal percentage (38.1 percent) last season and is 19th on the MSU career 3-point field goals list with 123.
